It is a cornerstone of our brand to make shoes with a small environmental impact. We are committed to making sustainable pieces in a slow fashion, small batch model. Our luxury sandals are predominantly made in-house in our Melbourne studio, with 80% of our collection proudly made here. Our more complex heeled styles are made responsibly in China.
Our Chinese sister factory is family run and shares our ethical values of respect for people and the environment. We have a close relationship with the owners, whom we have worked with for many years. Nelson Made are supported by the technical team who source materials, make our heels, fit and grade our patterns and stitch our uppers. Because of this partnership, we are able to focus on making in Melbourne at a reasonable cost.
We are committed to bringing all production in-house to our Melbourne studio by 2021.
Selecting our raw materials is a considered part of our research and development process. We source materials with the lowest possible environmental and human impact while still being suitable for footwear production. We use vegetable tanned leathers that are dyed with less harmful chemicals that chromium tanned hides. We are proud of the progress we’ve made towards using linen and recycled, repurposed and vintage fabrics. We work closely with Melbourne printing studio Next State who are accredited by Ethical Clothing Australia with all printing processes being Oeko-Tex approved.

Renewably powering our studio
Our Melbourne studio is powered by the sun sourced directly from solar panels on our baking hot roof. When the sun isn’t shining we source back up power from renewable energy start-ups. We use LED lighting and Energy Star-rated appliances in our studio and offices.
