Meet Yasmin Suteja

Today on the NM blog, we talk to Yasmin Suteja about her incredible list of projects and inimitable personal style, plus a few hidden shopping gems.

Hi Yasmin, you’re involved in so many incredible projects! Tell us a little bit about them.

Hello! I run Culture Machine - a production company, talent agency and studio space in Marrickville.

I juggle lots of projects between scouting talent and developing their portfolios, to producing and shooting fashion and lifestyle campaigns, to directing film projects.

Some of the exciting campaigns that I photographed this year include, JD Sports with Fufu and Tibbs Podcast, NIKE Journal with Flex Mami, Adidas Forum Campaign and Champion Rebound Campaign.

Last year I was fortunate to have worked on an incredible documentary series funded by the ABC, created and directed by my good friend Olivia Suleimon, called Rosaline's Untaming.

What are you currently drawing inspiration from? Who or what is inspiring you?

Currently I’m putting my time into developing stories for film and TV. I’m looking back at the past for inspiration, and am particularly interested in exploring my own family story, looking through old photo albums, going back to visit family members, asking questions and collating memories. I’m feeling a really strong nostalgia for the past.

We love how you put outfits together, how would you describe your personal style?

My personal style is a combination of comfort and edge. I’ve had a tendency to wear mostly monochrome and will look to interesting silhouettes to elevate a look.

I’ve always loved the “cut out” aesthetic that became really popular this year. I look to Aussie designers like Christopher Esber and Dion Lee for wardrobe staples.

I really changed the way I shop about 2 years ago when I moved into my own apartment and needed to be smart about my use of space. So I’ve invested in staple, timeless wardrobe pieces and vintage items that cover all occasions.

Any secret hidden shopping gems?

My biggest secret shopping gem for quality vintage is Mori Market.  It’s an instagram shop run by 2 gorgeous women, Wave and Seala. I love the way they style everything.

They sell via instagram story in an auction based format, first in first served! I got this stunning Issey Miyake pleats please top from them! Such a good find, and so reasonably priced for vintage!

And lastly, what are your favourite Nelson Made pieces at the moment?

I’m obsessed with the Juliette Midi! I have them in pink! They’re such an elegant silhouette, and I love the pop of colour!
